Showmax is well known for bringing heart-warming South African dramas to the silver screen – movies which are enjoyed by South Africans both at home and abroad. This month they haven’t disappointed with the screening of Dis Koue Kos, Skat – a delicious romantic comedy.

Food and love – a delicious recipe

The movie is based on Marita van der Vyver’s bestselling novel ‘Dis Koue Kos’ and revolves around a woman, Clara Brand, played by Anna-Mart van der Merwe, whose husband leaves her for a younger colleague and friend (Angelique Gerber). When Clara discovers the affair, she plots revenge, all the while juggling new friendships, new romances and the rediscovery of her passion for food.

An appetite for real life

In the world of Afrikaans romantic movies, this movie focuses on the more unglamorous side of relationships – betrayal and loss being a dominant theme. A well-written screen adaption combined with Etienne Fourie’s impressive directing skills, makes it a movie to sink your teeth into.

Food, revenge and life

Clara is a food writer and when her husband leaves her she decides to leave for Cape Town with her two children and make a new life for her family. Here she rekindles her love for cooking wonderful meals and re-enters the world of dating for the first time in 20 years. If you love food – you will love the beautifully framed shots of food and how the language of recipe instructions provide a window into Clara’s emotions.

The saying goes that ‘revenge is a dish best served cold’ and the film is about Clara’s process of accepting herself as she contemplates how she will wreck revenge on her husband Bernard Marx, played by Dean Lotz.

Dis Koue Kos, Skat is currently airing on Showmax and has been compared to hits like Love, Actually and Notting Hill. If you enjoyed Semi-Soet or Konfetti, you’ll love this movie and work up an appetite at the same time!
