Despite Australia restricting skilled migration into the country, the country still requires certain skills in order to expand. Here are 7 professions that Australia is in need of in 2018.

1. Building and construction

As a developing nation, large retail and commercial developments are taking place continuously across Australia and there is a strong demand for all professionals in the building and construction industry.  Construction project managers are in high demand on both the medium and long-term strategic skills lists, together with project builders, engineering managers, architects, civil, electric and structural engineers and surveyors. In order to apply under these occupations it is important you have a bachelor degree in a relevant field of study and that you possess experience in your area of qualification.

2. Nursing

Registered nurses and midwives are in high demand in Australia, although it is important to note that nurses that are educated in countries not recognised by Australian authorities will be required to undertake accredited competency assessment courses. Careers listed on the 2017/2018 medium and long-term strategic skills lists include medical administrator, nursing clinical director and primary health organisation manager.

3. Accounting and Finance

The demand for professions in accounting and finance is high, however it is reported that competition for these positions is high and applicants will require more than 60 points in order to progress their applications. Careers in demand in 2018 include accountant (general), management accountant, taxation accountant, external auditor, internal auditor and actuary.

4. Teaching and educational roles

Teachers are in demand with secondary school teachers being a priority. Early childhood (pre-primary) and special needs teachers are also in demand. Unlike other professions, post qualification work is not a pre-requisite for eligibility but it will increase your points on your Australian visa application.

5. Engineers

Applicants need to have the relevant professional degrees and working experience. Professions listed include chemical engineer, materials engineer, geotechnical engineer, transport engineer, industrial engineer, electronics engineer, agricultural engineer and biomedical engineer.

6. IT professionals

IT professionals are in demand globally and Australia is no exception.
