It’s almost weekend and, of course, as any other weekend we’re getting ready for a lekker braai. Shop of the week: Jonty Jacobs – purveyor of fine beef products
Like so many stories of innovation and entrepreneurship, the story of Jonty Jacobs started with a bit of disappointment. South African-born and Australian-reared Monique Daniels was disappointed in the quality of cured beef products made in her new home country – the U.S. of A. We don’t want to say that we told her so because, well, we didn’t – but we could have told her so. Luckily, like all saffas, Monique made a plan – starting her own biltong business to put American jerky to shame.
Monique and her husband Camran opened Jonty Jacobs’ doors in 2013 and now offer US made, USDA approved South African products to satisfied palates across the US.
Unlike jerky, biltong does not contain chemicals or additives and isn’t cured with sodium nitrate. Instead, optimal cuts of meat are rubbed with vinegar and spices and dried naturally to preserve the meat’s flavour.
