Pit Stop no.1 – the Garden Route
South Africa’s Garden Route is a spectacular place to visit, or even just to travel through. This exquisite stretch of land lies neatly tucked away between the Indian Ocean coastline and the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains. Stretching between Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to Storm’s River in the Eastern Cape, the Garden Route embraces a vast array of lush greenery, ancient forests, lakes, lagoons, and all the wildlife to populate these areas.
This pocket of nature has more to offer than just the astounding scenery, however. Situated on the Bloukrans Bridge in the Eastern Cape is the world’s highest bungee jump, for example. The Garden Route also offers plenty of places to climb, dive, swim and hike. Adventurers and explorers are in their element here.
If extreme sports aren’t your cup of tea, you can enjoy the more peaceful side of the Garden Route. From the most luxurious resort to the smallest accommodating campsite, there is always a place to relax, perhaps spot some of the endemic bird species, and breathe the fresh oceanic air. With the second mildest climate in the world, you can enjoy the pleasant South African evenings, with an array of wonders on offer.
With ten nature reserves spread across the Garden Route, it is one of the greenest and most eco-friendly places in the country. Various ecosystems thrive along this beautiful route, including marine sanctuaries teeming with soft coral reefs, seals, dolphins and the endangered Southern Right Whale. Wildlife parks and game reserves promote the safety and survival of endangered species, from bird sanctuaries for the Blue Crane, African Penguin and African Black Oystercatcher to protected areas for the majestic Black Rhino, African Zebra and many more. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful company of a number of rare and unique creatures at many of the hotels, resorts and parks dotted along the Garden Route.
It is no wonder that the Garden Route is one of South Africa’s best features. Although it is a popular tourist destination, with so much on offer there is always a place for you. Escape the hustle and bustle of the large cities and find sanctuary in South Africa’s Garden Route.
