Rainbow Friday: the SA expat’s Friday shopping feature #7

April 1, 2016

We’re back for another instalment of your #RainbowFriday feature and heading back across continents to the Big Apple. Can you hear Mr Sinatra serenading you? We surely can. But though we love us a little serenading, we couldn’t help wanting a little South African mixed in with our Murica.

Luckily, New Yorkers can have exactly that – rainbow nation flavour with the name Brooklyn Biltong.

Shop of the Week – Brooklyn Biltong

Brooklyn Biltong tells a proudly South African story – of an ex safa moving to the land of opportunity, falling in love, and sharing a part of the South African culture with America. Ah, who doesn’t like a good romantic story? Especially if it involves a South African expat.

Based in New York, the shop has a singular focus – biltong, biltong and more biltong.

About Brooklyn Biltong

As a laaitie, owner Ben used to play around in his grandfather’s butchery in South Africa. In his own words, his Oupa Dawie was a disciplined and lovable butcher and respected hunter who made the best biltong in Pretoria.

They would always leave with brown bags stuffed with the delicious dried meat. Little did Ben know that his life would take him across the great Atlantic to make a new home in the USA – a home where he would eventually share his love of biltong with the world.

Ben met love of his life Emily and, in trying to infuse their wedding with some South African flavour, decided to woo guests with the South African snacking favourite – biltong. It was such a hit that friends soon demanded more of the delicious safa snack.

And the rest, as they say, is history!

Shop products

It’s kind of obvious, but Brooklyn Biltong sells biltong – and their five star ratings speak to the quality of their products. If you think about it what else do you really need other than biltong?

The shop does, however, stock some branded items like mugs, T-shirts and adorable babygrows.
