As soon as we start making money, we are taught not to touch our retirement savings. The thought of transferring South African pension or retirement annuities abroad just feels counterintuitive. It should stay where it is and not be touched, right?
In most cases, of course, this way of thinking is 100% correct. You shouldn’t fiddle with your retirement reserves unless it’s necessary. Certainly not if you’re still living in South Africa and planning on staying here, or if you’re living abroad for a while and planning on returning. But if you’re an expatriate planning on staying put in your new country of residence, or if you need a financial boost to start your new life – the rules change.
Cash in your retirement savings
And thanks to legislative changes in 2008, you can now cash out your retirement savings before the age of 55 if you’ve moved abroad. You can then choose to reinvest this money, transfer it to your foreign pension fund or use the money to lead the life you’ve always wanted. In fact, you may even profit from transferring your pension fund or retirement annuity to your new home.
Of course, it takes some administrative wangling, but luckily this isn’t something you need to manage alone.
