May 8, 2017

If you’re a South African expat living in England, you’ll be counting the days until the summer sun starts to appear. But don’t despair, there are wonderful walks you can start doing now the weather is warming up. After spending months indoors during winter – these walks will get your blood flowing and reveal the most beautiful aspects of the United Kingdom to you.

7 Walks for expats living in the United Kingdom

1. The Five Horseshoes, Oxfordshire

Let’s start in Oxfordshire, home to many expat students and residents from all over the world. This area is also relatively close to London, easily accessible on the M40. Start the walk in Walting, follow Hill Road east past Christmas Common, head down Hollandridge Lane and onto Maidensgrove Common, where you will find the Five Horseshoes pub – a great place to enjoy good food and a bracing draught for the walk back.

2. Bury Ditches, Shropshire

The Bury Ditches is an Iron Age hill fort deep in the Welsh Marches and walking its concentric ramparts is deeply meditative and enjoyable. Close by is the Clunton Coppice nature reserve, which is also great for a spring stroll and you can enjoy a brief break in the Norman castle of Clun.

3. Chaldon Herring to Durdle Door, Dorset

This walk will take you approximately two and half hours and starts in the quiet village of Chaldon Herring, home to the novelist Sylvia Townsend Warner and the poet Valentine Auckland who fell in love there and spent their whole lives there. As you stroll along the cliff tops, you’ll be impressed with Dorset’s magnificent landscape and wonderful beaches.

4. Seven Sisters, South Downs

The Seven Sisters provides strollers with truly magnificent scenery including white cliffs, churning seas and Friston forest. Start at the Seven Sisters country park and head south along the Cuckmere river to enjoy every aspect of this wonderful walk.

5. Zennor Head, Cornwall

Strolling anywhere in Cornwall is a wonderful experience and if you walk west of St Ives, you’ll see the most dramatic, unspoilt scenery featuring granite cliffs and crystal-clear waters. This walk can take you close to cliff edges – so if you suffer from vertigo, you might prefer something a bit closer to the ground.

6. Wenlock Edge, Shropshire

The woods of Wenlock are the longest, unbroken stretch of woods in the whole of England stretching 20 miles in length. Start your walk in the town of Much Wenlock. Head up Windmill Hill and enter the woods at Shrewsbury road and follow the path to Blakewell Coppice and from there up Wenlock Edge – where you can catch glimpses of impressive views!

7. Moel Siabod, Snowdonia

Moel Siabod is a mountain in Wales, which is good for a stroll or a climb to the summit, where you can enjoy some of the finest views in the whole of Wales. The south-eastern ridge (Daear Ddu) has one of the best routes to the summit – if you plan on heading right to the very top!
