Living in Australia doesn’t automatically end your South African tax obligations. Without formally ceasing your tax residency (also known as tax emigration), SARS may still consider you a South African tax resident living in Australia.
Here’s how to officially cease your South African tax residency and make your life in Australia financially stress-free.
An RA is a tax-efficient savings vehicle traditionally locked until you turn 55. Under normal circumstances, you can only take one-third as cash, while the rest must purchase a pension. However, for expats, special rules apply that allow you to cash in your South African retirement annuity while living in Australia before retirement age.
To cash out a SA retirement annuity early from Australia, you must meet two main criteria:
You must cease your South African tax residency with SARS. Also known as tax emigration.
You must maintain your South African tax non-resident status for three consecutive years.
Changing your status from a South African tax resident to a tax non-resident is the key to unlocking your funds.
SA residents: Taxed on worldwide income.
SA tax non-residents: Taxed only on South African-sourced income.Without formalising this status, your RA remains locked. However, once you are a confirmed SA tax non-resident for three years, cashing in your South African retirement annuity while living in Australia becomes possible.
Did you leave SA years ago? If you left without formally ceasing tax residency, don’t panic. You can often backdate your tax emigration to the day before you permanently left. If that date was more than three years ago, your withdrawal could be processed immediately after SARS updates your status.

Ensure you have completed tax emigration (financial emigration via SARB is no longer the valid method).
Request your withdrawal after the 3-year wait (or immediately if backdated).
SARS issues a directive and withholds the applicable tax.
Funds are paid into a “Blocked Account” (SA non-resident account).
You transfer the funds to your Australian bank account in AUD.
