Typically, South African retirement annuities are locked until age 55, with cash access limited to just one-third. However, rules differ for South African emigrants. If you have permanently left the country, you can utilise a special exemption to cash in your South African retirement annuity after emigrating to the USA fully, bypassing the standard age restrictions.
To access your funds early, you must meet two non-negotiable criteria regarding your South African tax status:
You must formally cease your tax residency with SARS.
You must maintain this SA tax non-resident status for three consecutive years.
Only once this 3-year lock-in period is complete are you eligible for a full retirement annuity withdrawal from South Africa.
