Mielietert recipe

Mielietert-recipe

If you’re for sweetcorn as much as we are, then you’re bound to have chowed down on a big tray of mielietert in the past! Mielietert is a firm favourite in the South African home. It adorns the “sides” table at the weekend braai, features on the Christmas festive spread list, and even plays a starring role at the average Saffa family dinner night.

What’s so special about mielietert?

If you’ve never had mielietert before, by now, you’re wondering, “what gives!?” What on this sweet earth is so special about mielietert? Well, for starters, it’s a quick and easy dish to whip up. This isn’t mieliebrood, mind you – that’s an entirely different recipe for another day (just kidding – there’s a recipe for mieliebrood down below too)! Mielietert is made from just five ingredients, which is hard to believe because when you pop a spoonful of it in your mouth and it melts into your soul (at least that’s how it feels) and you find yourself going, “hmm, hmm, hmm!” you would never say that just five things were used to create it.

Such perfection is easier to achieve than you think. You just need some sweetcorn (which you can get at your local Spar, Checkers, or Co-Op if you’re abroad), self-raising flour, butter, eggs, and the not-so-secret creamy ingredient: cheese!

One of the great things about this traditional South African dish is that even though it’s sweet, it goes perfectly with all types of meat, salads, and of course, the braai-time favourite; garlic bread! We’re sure to have your tummy rumbling at the thought of these treats, so let’s jump straight into a quick and easy recipe so that you can make your very own mielietert at home.
