The term emigration (often also referred to as formal or financial emigration) is often misunderstood. Many people believe they’ve emigrated because they went through the “emigration desk” at the airport when leaving South Africa. This however, is not the case; emigration is a financial process – it simply changes your exchange control status from resident to non-resident.
